Primer For Acrylics?

i just tried Mr resin primer brush on primer on an resin figure, very very thick , tried to dilute it with laker thinner and it really doesn't work for me, don't like the texture it yields to the figure.
I have used Mr resin spray primer and i think is the best for plastic and resin figures,but the brush on really not worth buying it.

If you are in the US go to Auto Zone or O'Reilleys and pick up some gray primer called "Brite Touch" or could also be called "Touch 'n Tone", about $3 per can and is the smoothest and best primer I have ever used, and I've more or less tried anything out there. It is super smooth and is a nice flat that accepts paint real well. Easy to get and cheap, you cannot beat it, I promise!

Bought brite touch today and tried on a resin fugure , works great and the texture is super fine .
Will try on a metal figure next.

Hello Tony, If you need a black primer, try Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat flat black. I've used it with all painting mediums and have no problems. It dries silky smooth, and is the best dead flat black I've ever used in a spray can. Regards, SG

Excellent! It will work just as good on a metal figure. I'm telling you, it is the best primer ever, and for cheap and availability it is unbeatable. Glad you took the chance with it, I am sure you won't regret it!

Thanks! ,i will try to spray a metal figure tonight after work,i will let you know but for what i can see the texture,color is very similar to floquil multi-purpose primer ,but you have to let it cure for 48 hours or more.

I got home from work and went right to the primer can ,left the bottle in warm water for 5 minutes then shuck up the bottle for about one minute.
the result is nice and like i said before , same as floquil primer.
On the face it looks a little "grainy" but hopefully it will be ok when painted.

I use Citadel (GW) primer. Black or white is the same. For me is the best and easiest way to prime.

Why pay so much to prime if there are cheaper alternatives? It's not an insignificant difference either, some alternatives work out at a fraction of the price

BTW, Chaos Black isn't even primer in case you didn't know...

Could you reccomend a good, flat drying Black primer please ?

High priced GW Chaos drys gloss no matter how many tricks I try, and some of the Krylon sprays are flat, but thin out as they dry and become dark translucent gray...

GW Black has always dried matt for me ensure you shake for a good 2 minutes after it rattles. I rarely use it as car primer does most jobs for me but occassionaly I need a darker primer

Not sure what's available where you are but Rust-Oleum's High Heat flat black was recommended in a thread just a few days ago, and I think a few times in the past too. Should be tough as old boots, which is exactly what you want in a primer if the other requirements are met.

Which Krylons are you using/have used BTW? One of the black primers for the US that I've seen name-checked a few times, on pF and elsewhere, is a Krylon paint but no point in suggesting it if it's the one you're already familiar with.

Other than the colour not being completely black that may not be a huge issue, as long as it has bonded well enough to the model and still provides a good base for your paint layers. Many modellers use thinner coatings of primer - light enough that metal peeks through for example.

If you do need a completely featureless black base, any reason not to apply another coat or two? Many primers require more than one coat for complete coverage.

Incidentally, are you using black primer for a specific effect or is it just what you're used to? Grey is in many ways the ideal base to paint over and if you've not tried it I highly recommend it.

Here's another of its common issues - very varied results.

The main technical thing though is that it's just black paint. While the distinction between paint and primer can be arbitrary there have been a number of primer shoot-outs published which tested adherence and coverage, and Chaos Black has one thing it is consistently good at: coming in last place in these tests

And there's no getting away from the subject of cost - it's usually the most expensive option, sometimes by a large margin. Last time I read a price it was $15 a can while many direct substitutes* are less than half that, with some costing as little as $3 for a full-size can.

*Excluding any of the hobby spraycan primers, which can all be considered as boutique products.
