Princess Leia bust

Hello, this is my first attempt at sculpting a full figure or at least a bust I guess. I have done a lot of conversions with figures in the past, but I thought I would give it a go with this bust of Leia from my favorite movies. This is her in her memorable slave oufit from Return of the Jedi. I hope to have it primed in a week or so and then comes the paint. Only a couple more parts to add like the straps to her top, the collar and chain that will connect to the hand and of course her ponytail (my wife will help with the braiding, I hope). Tell me what you guys think, its a close resemblence right? If found it challenging to sculpt a "real" person and try to portray a likeness of her- especially with Leia because she really has no standout facial features, she has that "girl next door" look to her.

Eeeh... I am afraid that it looks more like a men than leia... You seem to control well the different paste you used but the anatomy is far from believable. The head is too big and has the attribute of man more than a women. The arm is too short and the hair definitely needs more finesse.

You show great potential, just have to work on details and fine quality.

Scott, I believe you're capable of sculpting a likeness of Carrie Fisher but missed the mark here. I think it's possible to go back and fix the problem areas. I agree it's not an easy face to do.


what I would do is gather the bst pics you can find and enlarge/reduce just the head to the size of your bust. This one is close to the angle of your picture.

The chin and nose need a little work. you added quite a degree of difficulty with that expression.

You're right Gary! Carrie's likenes is notoriously hard to capture. I have yet to see a good sculpt of her. The best examples have been of a younger fuller Carrie like the Sideshow example. Really tough sculpt.

Thanks guys- I will be redoing a couple of the things that you brought up on the critiques, I definetly see some problems that should be easy fixes and will improve the anatomy of the figure. I guess after staring at it day in and day out for a couple months you get "accustomed" to it and get used to the look of it, and it helps to get others input and a unbiased look to bring out the flaws.

Definitely interested in seeing where you go with this. I'm a big fan of sci-fi, so I like seeing these things attempted. Keep in mind, I'm not sure we saw Leia ever smile when she was Jabba's prisoner... so removing the smile may make sense.

He's known as BIB for that I have to say I think this isn't quite right too, the mouth isn't wide enough is the first thing that you spot and the length of the nose is a little short I think, but it's very good (probably looks a little better painted).

His recent Al Swearengen isn't quite there either, but his likeness of Ahhhnold on the other hand is about the best out there:

What? His Al Swearengen is so right on, it's scary. Maybe you haven't seen it painted up?

I am with you TorMag that is a really great piece. I have seen Davids in person and it is really nice. I had not seen the other one it is like two sides of the same coin one is Al Swearengen after a bath and the other is him after a hard night in his saloon.

I don't want to divert the thread any more Tor but the likeness is stylised, possibly deliberately. Still looks a lot like him but check the eyes, the cheekbones, the nose and the visible ear

I think that Einion is right about the likeness, the sculpt seems to portrait a more young and lean version, but when talking about a such talented sculptor and a so nice sculpt I think that it is just a matter of vision and interpretation.
For me the sculpt is more real than the real one, it seems that some items are intentionally different to give a more strong idea about the character.
