Please could someone advise me, what i am doing wrong with mixing two paints together.

The paints i am using are Tamiya clear and Vallejo paint, when i mix them together and paint it on a figure, it leaves a white chalk finish.:(

King regards:)

Are you sure you are using Tamiya clear finish? Is it Number X21 by any chance? If it is there's your answer. If not, I would suggest that the two are not intermixable with the Tamiya having a kind of solvent base. I suggest you try Vallejo's own acrylic finish.
Hope that this helps.

Regards Ian :)

Hello again Wellington, I've just been on this site, http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/archive/index.php/t-342543.html and it most definitely states that Tamiya and Vallejo paints will not mix for the reason I gave above, Tamiya is thinner based though you can thin it with water as well as Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) which is basically what Tamiya thinner is. Hope this clears this matter up.

Is this X-22, which is a gloss varnish, or the colours maybe (Clear Red etc.)?

As mentioned Tamiya acrylics are a little different from the usual water-thinned hobby paints like Vallejo but the two types can sometimes mix together okay. Assuming you are using X-22 I wouldn't expect that this would result in a chalky finish, quite the opposite in fact! The clear colours dry very glossy too, and in mixtures they would normally impart quite a bit of shine.

Hi Guys

The tamiya paint i am using is X-21 is this the right product or should i be using something different to take the shine of my figure painting

many thanks for all your help

It's the right stuff, you're just using too much.
You need just enough to slightly cloud your water on the palette.
This may help,

Hi Carl

Many thanks, but I am slightly confused. are you saying, paint a base colour say field grey let this dry them add the x-21 to the figure. Or are you saying a little at a time with field grey .

I got similar situation before, I applied the base coat by airbrush with Tamiya colour, but there was also a white edge left between my Vallejo highlight/shadow and the Tamiya base coat, so I guess maybe its not just the problem of X21.

Cheers

Easiest way to do it would be put a drop of water on the palette. Add just a tip full (size 1 brush) of X21, in to the water. Just enough to turn it slightly cloudy. Then use that to mix up. I make a solution of it up in an eye dropper bottle. It's all a bit trial and error, but you'll get there. Not enough and you'll still get a slight sheen. It's easier to add a touch more, and go over it again with well thinned paint, that will flatten it back.
