Howdy all!

In the midst of studying for my RN, I'm painting in the occasional spare time to keep my sanity. I've chosen several English Civil War figures from my grey army and a couple of Zouaves to work on over the rest of the summer and winter as I hit the books.

This English officer has ribbing on his sleeve. I first thought it might be armor but decided it is clothing.

Two questions:

Am I right?

Would that be a shirt with the ribbing or is it the buff coat with ribbing over it, or what?

Any suggestions on painting this figure would be appreciated.

There may not be a picture attached, having difficulty uploading the pics. Hopefully additional posts will let me add the pictures.

Thanks,

Kevin D.

My apologies. I am not able to add pictures at this time. I'll bring this back up in a day or two when I can add pics.

Sorry

Might be piping on his doublet sleeves.
If he has a buff coat over his doublet, its possible that the sleeves have been unattached from the buff coat, or its simply a doublet.

Shirts had the fancy roughs around the collars and sleeves, or for the rank and file simple collars and cuffs, but simple linen all around. No ribbing.

Need a picture to give you anything more accurate than that.

That's a good start! Thanks!

I figured that there would be someone out there with more understanding of the ECW time period than my limited knowledge.

Its an area of interest for me but am always learning.

Still working on getting pics up. Still no "browse" button on this message device to let me upload.

Thanks again... pics soon I hope.

Hi Kevin

I think your best bet would be to have a look at the Osprey elite series ‘Soldiers of the English Civil War (2)’ this would give you all the info you need.

As far as I can see, the buff coat of the Royalist Officer, did have ribbing, but more than likely an ornate edging to the half sleaves. But they did use armour, from just a cuirassier to full body armour.

The cuirassier was more likely to appear over the buff coat on lower rank soildiers such as Harquebusier for them to be able to move easier. The full body armour is illustrated brilliantly in the afore mentioned Osprey book, as Haslerigges’s Lobsters’. They were refered by this name because of the amount of plates on the armour as they were layered in such a way they looked like lobster tails.

There were also Doublet coats with slits in the sleaves and body of the jacket, which the under shirt could be seen through, as Mike said they had varying sizes of rough collars. (Pictures below)

I hope this helps, if you need anymore info please let me know

Dave
