Question on Blakeslee Cartridge box

Hello,
I promised a friend I would do a Michael Roberts Cavalry Trooped sculpted by non-other than Carl Reid who seems to never sleep, eat, or move from his bench. Just kidding but the guy is amazing. The figure has the Blakeslee Cartridge box. Is it possible a trooper carrying a Springfield trapdoor 45/70 would carry this box? Could it be used with the trapdoor? Thanks for any info.
