Hey, all -

I'm working on a Black Dog brand 1/10 Sioux Lakota bust, B10018. I have two questions:

1) The box art (attached) shows only a front view, and I've not found any others anywhere. The illustration has four feathers, but I have no idea how they're attached to the hair in back. Is it safe to assume a circular roach would be used in reality?

2) The box art also shows face paint. I've not been able to find examples or information on this particular scheme, and I'm not sure what it represents. Is it a realistic scheme, and is it appropriate for the dress?

Finally, I have several Native American busts and figures in queue. Any suggestions or recommendations for dress and face/body paint patterns would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help!

Best bet is to find references that you like and ignore the box art. Sometimes box artists don't research as much due to time frames so go for a stereotypical look.

Wholly agree. Rule #1 of static modelling, e.g. tanks and planes, is DON'T TRUST THE BOX ART! Rule #2 is DON'T TRUST RESTORATIONS! o_O

I'm not familiar with that bust, but if it has beadwork on it, avoid bright colors, particularly "turquois" like the plague unless you intend to represent a 20th c. costume. Those bright beads did not exist during the period up to the 20th c. with the advent of chemical additives to the manufacturing process. The bright colors look great against the subdued colors of the buckskin and hide clothing, but it just isn't accurate. This is nothing I came up with on my own; this knowledge is a direct result of my friendship with Guy Herrick, probably the best authority on the early western Native American dress and decoration I have come across in my painting experience. Thanks, Amigo.

Thanks for the warning, winfield! If you check the box art, you'll see some turquoise-colored beads, but most apparent are the large, turquoise-colored ear rings. I've been thinking of this bust as c. 1850-1900; based on your post, I did a little digging, and couldn't find any reference to Lakota Sioux using turquoise. With that, I'll find another color scheme for the ear rings (if I use them at all); don't know that I'll repaint the beads, though. :)
