...When I was a teenager I read 'Fiction',.. However, once I got a taste of 'History', and factual stuff. I simply could not read 'Fiction'. This applies to the present moment. I just can't read this stuff...

I can sympathize. Any knucklehead with a word processor can put something down, and we wind up with so much content that the quality is diluted.

I tend to read the same fiction works over and over, and I'm very leery of picking up something new, unless someone I know recommends it.

I read "Shogun" anew every year, because I think it's just so well-written. Same goes for some of Michael Crichton's novels, especially "Jurassic Park." I also re-read Tolkien every so often, as well as some classic American science fiction, especially Ray Bradbury's short stories, Heinlein's "Starship Troopers", and Azimov's "Foundation" triology. I have also taken to reading Philip K. Dick, having seen enough films based on his works. His novels are hit-or-miss, in my opinion, and in the case of "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and "Blade Runner", I think the movie is much better than the novel.

Prost!

For fiction books influenced by 'history', (wether as an allegoric study or just novels inspired by past events I have never decided),
my favourite book series are the 'Heroic Fantasy' books of David Gemmell, sadly no longer with us
The sagas of 'Druss the legend' is the story of a man who's reputation in battle enables a citizen army to face and defy their would-be conquerers.
Great stories, as are the rest of his series of Drenai Tales
They are usually listed under the 'Heroic Fanatsy sections of book stores, but they are more fanciful in truth, and a cracking good story.
