Red Cloud – Chief of The Sioux
200mm resin
Sculpted / painted by Gunnar Lindfors
6 parts

This is a beautifully sculpted rendition of Red Cloud, proud Chief of the Sioux. The kit comes wrapped in bubblewrap in a sturdy brown box with the color guide on the front of the box.

The kit is comprised of 6 yellow resin parts and all parts dry-fitted perfectly in to their respective locations.

is.php

The main part of the kit is the upper trunk and right arm and hand. Virtually seamless and the painted can take the kit right out of the box, clean and go right to priming.

Right side detail shows the attention to beadwork detail and fringe along the bone breast plate.

Rear view showing the attention to detail Gunnar has taken with the hair and ties to the neck bandana.

The finely detailed head feather has a resin peg so that it locates to the back of the head perfectly.

Here is the walking stick that was presented to Red Cloud upon his visit to Washington DC.

is.php

A well sculpted hand showing hand wrinkles and fingernails ( which are turned down as the hand holds the cane).

is.php

Here is a separate fringe that attaches to the underside of the right arm adding a dimension of realism to the bust. Dry fit was perfect.

is.php

A comprehensive color guide also shows the shirt, beadwork design and a photo actually taken of Red Cloud holding the walking stick.

is.php

On the fact sheet / color guide there is also a photo of the actual shirt that Red Cloud was wearing which is now on display at the Smithsonian Museum.

is.php

Model Cellar has also provided a detailed color guide of the beadwork design for both porcupine quill or beads.

Below is the photograph reference that Gunnar used for the sculpting of Red Cloud. It’s the closest likeness I have seen in miniature.

Conclusion

Beautiful miniature bust with fine attention to detail and seamless casting. Highly recommended for the Native American painter / collector.

Not my area of interest but a beautiful sculpt especially the face. Alot can be done with this piece. (y)

Very nice bust and I fear that my shopping list will be longer and longer and ....

To much to buy and paint and not enough money and time

Isn't that always the case........"So many figures.........so little time"

Hi Gunnar is a complex{difficult} work, very especial person (portrait) the Red Cloud - you have very well shown similarity! Also has well shown clothes.
Yours faithfully, Zlobov Sergey.

P.S. Gunnar, forgive that I shall show one small and insignificant amendment;-)
The list is very good, but for a sizable bust it is possible to show more precisely different color of beads on a tape and.... A mistake in a direction of numbers{lines} - not across, and along a tape numbers{lines} from beads. It is not important, but is appreciable;-) Look at a photo of a shirt.

It is very beautiful shirt, but she{it} is not a personal fighting shirt of the Red Cloud is a symbol of Indians of plains, in this shirt there is a photo of several people in delegation Sioux to Washington in 1880, it both the American Horse and the Small Big Person and certainly the Red Cloud. The present{true} shirt of the leader is in a museum ' Codi " (if not I am mistaken) and looks so:

On this photo the exact quantity{amount} of beads and numbers{lines}, and also exact color of a leather{skin} and beads on a tape is well visible:

Hi Guy,

thank you very much for your review of the bust of Chief Red Cloud. It is a very fine and authentic representation of the the Oglala-Lakota Chief of the "Bad Faces" Groupe.
Despite the fact that he don't belong to a traditional chiefs family he rose to a respected and famous war leader of the Oglala-Lakota.
His family still lives on the Pine Ridge Reservation and on of his great-great-grand sons, Henry Red Cloud is very active to better the life conditons on the reservation by the "Buffalo Return Program" and a "Organic Food" iniciative. A iniciative I support since some years.

The shirt of Red Cloud is of interest, as some of the ornaments are done with black glass-beads. Black glass beads were uncommen or at least very rare among Lakota shirts. For this reason the shirt represents a very late version of Lakota war shirts, were tribal specialities in using special colors seemd to fade a little bit. By the way, also other Lakota leaders-like "Mahpia Icahtagay" or "Touch the Cloud" was photopraped in the same shirt.

But of course it is absolutely correct to use this shirt as the shirt of Red Cloud, as actually he wore it.

Beautifull bust!

Thank you for sharing the review with us.

Also my thanks to Sergey for the photo ot the Red Cloud shirt with leggins.

Many greatings from Germany

Hallo,

my wife had informed me, that "Mahpia Icahtagay" correclty translated don't means "Touch the Clouds" as published in alle books, but correctly "Grows up to the Clouds". He was over 6 feet.

Many greetings

Bruno

Nice review of the kit. The commentary along with pictures will certainly give prospective painters a little more reference to work with.~Gary
