Hi everyone, I am new here. Been modelling since i was a kid (mainly on Gundam, Japanese anime figure and car model) and recently migrate myself to figuring. I am still experimenting all the acrylic technique. Alright had enough introduction of myself, and here's what I want to share with everyone.

I was totally inspire by this picture on the news paper last year and I decided to sculpt this out. I have used few different materials on this figure. The body - super sculpey, head - 50% sculpey + kayo poly clay and the rest are white milliput.

Sculpt a few heads initially and re-cast them with resin. I pick the first left at the end

The next step would be adding details to the uniform (Still doing some research at this moment) Please don't hesitate to leave some feedback.

Cheers and Thanks for reading :D

G'day Leo,

A great photo on the front page of my local newspaper. I love the subject and think you're doing a fantastic job on this sculpt. If I can help you with reference material (photos etc) please let me know.

Keep up the good work with your sculpting and I look forward to seeing some more pics as you progress.

Thanks for the commend guys. Sculpted the pocket and some crease on the uniform last night. Will probably prime the figure then fix the surface in the next few days. Hopefully some new photo in the weekend.

Tony: Thanks for the offer, and I got few questions for you.
1. Is here any badge in the the heat in WW1 uniform? If yes where are they (In the front or left like these days)
2. Are there any badges on the jacket?

Will keep up my work Tony, hopefully get this done before wamex this year:rolleyes:

Hi Leokc ng,

I'm not sure exactly what sort of badges you are referring to in question 1. If you are referring to his service ribbons/medals, he would not have been wearing them on his combat uniform, unless he had received a decoration for bravery, such as an MM, DCM etc.

On both collars of his jacket he would have worn a small brass Rising Sun badge, like the one attached. On his epaulettes he would have worn a small half-moon shaped brass badge with the word "Australia" on it.

If you live here in Perth, perhaps we can get together and I can help you with your sculpting and painting. Please send me a PM with your phone number and I'll call you.

Opps found it. Do they wear this badge in the combat uniform

BTW, the figure is 1:35 scale

Hi Leo,

I understand now. I think there must have been a typo in your last question.

Yes the Rising Sun badge, as its called, is also worn on the left underside of the slouch hat. The Rising Sun badges worn on the collars are exactly the same shape, only smaller in size.

I've sent you an email and hope we can catch up soon.

G'day Leo, Wlcome to the planet.
It's nice to have another figure modeller in Perth :)

Hmmm... I think I forgot to *cough cough* harrass my parents to buy the paper on rememberance day last year :D
As for the figure, it's looking good for a start. As Tony told me very recently, it's a good idea to sculpt and practice heads to start off with. By the looks of it, thats what you have done.

Cheers,
Daniel

Ok guys more update for tonight's progress. I have sanded the surface then prime the figure(the surface is still pretty rough ). Finally you can see the details of the face in the photo :D

You've made a very good beginning. I recommend that you check your anatomy and proportions and verify scale. One of my personal bugaboos also, so don't think you are alone! What often happens is that as you add a layer, you don't keep the layer thin enough and the figure gets out of scale or out of proportion. There are several excellent references on PF.

Just a personal thing - I don't mix up sculpting media like you did. It works for some people, but not for me.

All the best,
Dan

Hi Leo,

I agree with Dan, you need to check your anatomy and proportions. Having said that, you've made excellent progress and this figure is really coming together. Keep up the good work mate.

Hi Dan, Tony
I agree with you guys too. I feel something funny with the proportion but I can't tell where. At this stage I think i will probably cast it into resin before I do further modification, as the base is pretty fragile.

For mixing up sculpting media, that is because I had a block of super sculpey sitting at home. Have to say they are good sculpting media but they are too soft for small details like 1:35 head. Instead of spending extra money on super sculpey firm, I decided to do a experiment of mixing kato and super sculpey (To me kato is too elastic). I am very happy with the mixed clay, and is definitely the right hardness that I am looking for. Going to stick with super sculpey for awhile until finish that block. :(

Tony: will catch up with you sometime for your advice.

Proportion Check info

Hi Leo,
one of the past pF members had links to this site, which I share with you

http://www.fineart.sk/index.php?s=8&cat=12

The advantage of this is that with a little bit of work, you can adjust the figure charts to match the size you are sculpting in.
Search the rest of the pages, or the home site, and there is stuff on heads, hands, faces, for both genders and all ages.

Hope this helps; lots of good work so far.

Cheers

Hi Leo, from one new kid on the block to another, great work, at 1st I would of chosen the head on the right but after clean up and posing you have made the right choice. Keep on sculpting.
Cheers Ken
