I recieved my flats from fellow planet member, Roy Hunt, in the mail yesterday and wanted to do a review of them for other planet members so they could also see the tremendous detail Roy has sculpted into his flats. The first flat is the 75mm, 6 indian scene of Chief Joseph Rides to Surrender. Roy Sculpted this flat from the painting of Howard Terpning which appears in the book "The Art Of Howard Terpning" published by Bantam books. ISBN 0-553-08113-6.

Upon opening the flats that Roy had sent me I was amazed at the sculpting detail he was able to achieve in something so thin. I spent most of the afternoon yesterday trying to photograph the flats and ended up with about 50 photos of which I choose the following 5 which showed the best detail Roy has sculpted.

Here is the overall flat that contains 1 horse and 6 Indians and is 5 1/2" tall. Pretty good sized flat compared to others I have done.

I decided to get closer with the camera and this is where I ran into problems with lighting and shadows to show the detail that is there.

Here is the very front of the flat and the lead Indian has a feather sticking up from his head which I broke off while unpacking the flat. It will be re-attached right befor painting and reinforced on the back side to give this feather more stregnth.

You can see in this photo the tremendous detail with the folds of the blanket, the muscle detail of the horse, and the hair of the horses mail all clearly sculpted into the flat.

Finally the rear of the scene shows the individual detail Roy has sculpted into each figure.

I will find and post the photo of the original painting by Terpning. The book I have shows the painting over 2 pages and I could not get a good photo of it from the book.

There are 2 other flats that Roy Sent me that I will take photos of and post in this thread.

I also went to Michaels today and purchased a 8 X 10 shadow box that will recieve the flat once I am finished painting it. Photos of it will be posted after I copy this thread later to my vbench.

Any questions or comments are welcomed.

Guy, if you have trouble taking pictures op close, try taking one from a distance on verry high resolution and than taking pieces out of it with a softwareprograme like Photoshop.
It works wel for me, but you have to start with something like 5 or 6 milj. pixels.

In any case i you make me think abouth painting a flat ;)

Hello guys...for those of you who might like to see some close-ups I've taken a few of the master and attached them below.

The first is the central vignette.

This is a gem. I wish I had snagged one when they were first available.
If they ever become available again, I'll buy one. Such a great piece of art.
Roy Hunt's finest, IMHO.

Well, I'm a new member here and I've yet to be able to get my jaw up off the floor.
I can't add anything here that hasn't already been said...simply beautiful.

Hello,

a great and beautifull worke, based on the painting of Howard Terpning, great. Roy Hunt was able to show the desperation of this so badly misstreated Nez Perze People. The vignette touches the heart.

Best regards from a very sowing Bavaria

Hello all,
It's great to be able to log Pf again for about the past 6months I haven't been able to get a connection and yes I tried everything. Service provider couldn't do anything either.........all's well that ends well.

Anyway

I'm one of the lucky ones to have this along with a couple of other flats by Roy, if any of you can get your hands on one--- purchase, theft, extortion -- they're all good, you won't be disappointed.
The Nez Perce vignette is a joy to paint and quite a challenge to get what is an extremely difficult colour scheme right.......muted colours, snow and particularly trying to get the sense of weather conditions evident in the finished piece.

Bruno for the first time in years I won't make Garmisch Partenkirchen for New Year and the 4 Hills Tournament... I'd managed to repress the disappointment and you go and mention the snow...........what a cruel world.

Best wishes and it's great to be back
