Yeah, I know...this is not a literary society or military history forum, but I think most of us read military histories, so...

Riding the Retreat - Mons to the Marne 1914 Revisited by Richard Holmes, published by Jonathan Cape, London, 1995. ISBN 0-224-03762-5.

To quote the frontispiece: "One August morning in 1993, the military historian Richard Holmes nudged his heels into the flanks of his horse, Thatch, and set off with four friends to follow the route taken by the BEF nearly 80 years previously on its great retreat from the German offensive at Mons."

If you have an interest in the early stages of the Great War, cavalry, horses and riding, and understanding the role place and terrain play on military actions, you'll enjoy this one. On top of everything else, it's a fun read! :)

And you can't say that often about Great War histories.

Unfortunately this one is out of print, but you can pick up a used copy from Abebooks or Amazon. Some of the prices for first edition collectables are just crazy, however, so fair warning.
