Hi Carl,
I have an illustration for the Rifle Brigade 1854 that shows it plain blue with no markings - from British Infantry Uniforms from 1660 by Michael Barthorp & Pierre Turner.

Sorry, for the really poor image I just uploaded (taken v quickly on the rubbish camera on my iPad). Might help to say that although the water canteen here just looks like it could be the edge facing out it is actually the round front showing. Don't know how correct this is. Interestingly though the other illustrations on this page also show canteens without markings - perhaps something to do with them being on campaign?
