Heard Roy Cross had passed on Radio 4 News - he was responsible in a big way in getting me into modelling as a youngster. His box art work with Airfix was outstanding. I think he started as an illustrator of flight manuals for an aircraft company. In his later years he was an excellent maritime artist.

An absolute genius of an artist. Responsible for the golden age of Airfix box art.

One can't help but theorise that once the company started sanitising their box art in response to PC demands for "less violence", this might have been at least partly responsible for their downturn in fortunes from the late 70s onwards. I mean, when you're a young kid in the late '70s or early '80s with your pocket money or paper round earnings burning a hole in your pocket, a photo of a ho-hum finished model aeroplane just standing there on a generic blueprint doesn't exactly get the creative and artistic juices flowing does it?! So you're probably going to end up down the arcade spending it on playing Space Invaders instead.

Roy Cross' art was massively inspirational to a whole generation of young modellers (most of us included). And he chalked up his ton (plus one day), so what an amazing innings that was.
