His book "Forty-six Years a Fighter Pilot" is an excellent read. With 24 WW2 kills and four MiGs in the "Rolling Thunder" campaign in VN he must be the all-time number one US fighter ace. Only Steve Richie and Charles DeBellevue topped him in VN, and they were much younger.
Superb bust Eduardo - somebody will make a brilliant job of painting it.

Phil.

The 'all time US ace' is Richard Bong with 40 kills. There are also a couple more pilots with more victories than Olds including, from memory, 'Pappy' Boyington and David Campbell.

Olds was a great fighter pilot and his book was a great read.

Good post. Was just up in Superior Wisconsin and spent an afternoon at the Bong Museum. (Lol)

Yes, you are absolutely right Gary. I guess I was thinking of the pilots who had converted to the jet era and had got scores on both piston-engined and jet fighters. I've not read much on the WW2 US aces but I will certainly be looking for some books on the subject. My "other" modelling niche is post war US jets up to the end of the Century series.

There are some theories out there he had more kills in VN but didn't want to have them recorded as that meant at 5 kills the Air Force sent you home
