Thanks so much Tony. I have written that into my notes and will be experimenting with it. I would have never thought to desaturate with burnt sienna and orange! How can I learn this stuff! Are there books I can read to teach master painting skills?

Thanks agains so much to all. There are many books and theories of color. In English I do not know what to advise. To desaturate, in general, add to the basic a premix of complementary color + white. But there are cases where the rules have exceptions, such as adding Burnt Sienna, is one of those. In English for me is a bit 'hard to explain.

If you search for "how to desaturate a color" on google you will find many answers. The books that I have are in Italian, and cover color theory, painting techniques and oil paintings of old masters.
greetings
Tony
