Finally making a start on the figure, following my little sideshow with the shield.
Skin stuff mostly. The face is well sculpted but hemmed in on three sides by the lion’s head headdress.
The jewellery on the outstretched hand is nice. I did the wooden stave support as it ended in the right fist and otherwise would make it awkward to get the shadows right at the juncture.
No doubt will have another look as things move along, to fine tune as skills allow.
Starting to look like a lion, that's going to look great. Apparently lions with darker manes are more successful in winning a pride than those with lighter more sandy coloured manes. Odd the things that stick in the mind for no apparent reason.
I’m calling the lion’s head done. The mane has a three-colour undertone, with a light sandy brown for highlights, followed overall by a weak lampblack in the deepest recesses. Painting is a bit stylised but can’t see that anything else would do, without looking too fussy for the subject.
I think you get to a point and have to ask yourself if any thing further you can do will benefit the look. If not, stop. Anything more just gets fiddlesome without real value-added.

Also I find it helps to step back, do something else for an hour and then go back to it, waste of an hour but seeing it fresh often reaffirms what you thought or you stop more that can be done.
