So what's with the recent flood of new releases of ancient roman subjects? I mean, I understand that the market produces what we buy most, but eventually, you'd think the market would be saturated with gladiators and praetorians. Just check out all the new releases listed here to see what I mean.

As long as I can remember we have been flooded with Romans......yet you don't see that many at the shows.

Ah..., Roma, Roma, Roma... That remember me the never ending teasing between Lazio and Roma football supporters.
There a lot of gingles (borrowed from some old movies) out there about that, but if you do not understand italian they are hard to catch:
Mille Lire
Forza Roma

Really? ;)

I kinda have the same reaction to German WW2 SS figures? Do we really need another German SS peeling potatoes in the Ukraine, June 1944 when we already have seven other German SS peeling carrots near Leningrad, 1942?

Not that there is anything wrong with that....

Hi Matt, interesting question but may be you have to consider that the Historical Roman Period is a really long period, there are many characters, wars, campaigns, people, places, art, Warrior, etc...

I been in this hobby for almost seven years now and there are always new Release of Roman Figures, Bust, flats(Well may be not much flats) and always there is something new.

May be many of us don't know it but must of us got a roman on their figure collection or waiting on the bench or in our gray army.

Luca after hearing the two audio link, I can only remember the phrase from Astérix & Obelix after checking the SPQR "Sono pazzi questi Romani", which translates into "These Romans are crazy."

Saludos Amigo y buena Suerte, me encanta tu busto de Dante

Well I for do not mind Roman figures as long as they are good. But I must admit if I never saw another little plastic Nazi that would be ok with me. As every one has said there are so many of them. I mean if we never got a new one we would more then likely never run out. One thing that has made the newer Roman figures instering to me is that they seem to be getting more and more accurate as new archaeological finds add to our knowledge of what they must have looked like. Some of the finds in England where we have cloth and items that do not survive very well in other places have really added to what we know. They are even starting to be able to figure out what color some of the cloth is. The peat in the soil usually makes it hard to tell but they now have some tests that can revel what color the cloth was originally. Sometimes they are even able to treat the cloth and bring back some of the color.

I for one have been very glad to see a lot more really nice American GI figures of late. we are starting to get some really great figures. I remember talking to John Rosengrant about this at a show once. He said he really liked doing US GI's his dad was a US tanker. But he also said the German stuff is what really sells so he had to do German figures in order to do at least some American GI figures. He has done some really classic American figures. For me these figures are long overdue.

I find myself in utter agreement with everybody on this one. At least the Roman empire spanned centuries and continents and also left a proud legacy. England became a dump again when they left us. What on earth have those Nazis ever given us? Jeff is 100% correct, if I ever saw another it'd be too soon. You can even get figures of German soldiers from WWII sleeping - I ask you!!

John Rosengrant can be justly proud of the American servicemen he has modelled. I've never seen him do a bad one. And the legacy they left is one we all enjoy today, especially those of us in Europe. ;)

Personally I don't mind figures of the same era, as long as they are well sculpted and with a smart pose or something. It can be a Roman, a WWII German, a Napoleonic or whatever. I only care about the quality, because we are talking about spending our hard earning money here.
If you don't get the demanded quality, then yes... I would protest on seeing 100 bad sculpted Romans.
Just my 2 Euros :)

Hmmm.... Quality trumps everything, doesn't it? Personally, I'm not much on Napoleonic figures, but I can appreciate and even enthuse over a very well sculpted and painted French Hussar, etc. Or any other period. Romans included.

Except maybe Nazis/SS. Hey, give 'em a rest, please. I know they sell very well, but gee....

And I completely agree - there are too few really well done American figures of WW2 or WW1. Some faces with character and with the smorgasbord looks of the "typical" American! Anybody remember the picture I posted of the WWI seaman mustering out in 1919 in St. Louis, MO? Those were some great examples of "typical" American faces. Man, I wish I were a better sculptor!

All the best,
Dan

My opinon has not changed but I have to say that I do not think that every German soldier was a Nazi. I have had the pleasure of meeting quite a few German vets. You would be suprised at how many we have here in southern California. I have never met one that I felt was a Nazi. I myself have painted more then a few German pilots. I am in to WWII airmen. It is kind of neat to me to go to pilot signings and see German and US vets sitting side by side. I remember telling a German pilot about how my great uncle was lost in WWII. I told him that he was serving in the Pacific. He said "Good that means that I could not have shot him down". I said that even if he had that I would have forgiven him. If he and the men he tried to shoot down could sit side buy side and sign books that I could forgive him even if he had shot a family member down.

All of that being said I am still not in to SS figures. As we have all said there are more then enough to go around. But to each his own. But I think I should add if you are a sculptor and would like to do some more US GI's, I for one would be glad to buy them.

Best
Jeff

Speaking of well done American WW2 figures. This is the Wolf Souvenier Hunter I did while back. Still one of my favorites and loads of character. I think this is one of Roger Saunders (?).

I'd do some more WW2 figures like this one...
