Quite a complicated question! it seems to vary according to the type of Legion, shape of the shield and time period-I have a book with about 50 different designs.

I happen to be reading a book on The Legions of Rome Carl, I'll have a look into it as there were many . Stand by I'll see what I can come up with . Karl
