Hi all
Can anyone tell me if all Roman Signifiers wore standard Roman helmets under the animal skin or did some just have a sort of skull plate rather then a full helmet?
I've been trying to find this out but I keep coming up against a brickwall, so just wondered if there's any Roman experts out there that might be able to put me right on this.
Cheers
Jim

Jim,
Signifiers wore the typical gallic style helmet but with less adornment on the helmet itself or decoration than their imperial counterpart. i.e. less bronze bosses, trim etc.
Reference Gallic style B or C helmet.

Representational evidence show that Signifers PROBABLY wore standard helmets. The suggestion that they protected their heads only with Imperial Gallic or Imperial Italic style helmets bare no ground however. These helmet types - for all we know - came into use in the first principate (Augustus' reign) or even later. But signifers existed in the legions long before that already. So in the early and late republican times they almost surely would have worn Montefortino and Coolus helmet styles, maybe Agen Port type helmets too. In short, it is all about the era.

Hope this helps.
