Hi Guys.
Im doing a bit of research for a figure project.I have a few images of Royal marines and especially SBS chaps in a smock with an epualette/rank slide on chest?.Does anybody know what the designation of this jacket?.So many images of falklands winter gear that is misleading.Any help or image references are most welcome.Ive seen also an SBS chap with what appears as him carrying a small sort of bergan on his back?.Its not a large usual rucksack/Bergan.So anybody who has any thoughts etc please do comment.
Many thanks and regards to all.
Richard

Hi Richard. Could you post pictures? Sounds like the normal windproof smock, I'm pretty sure they had a rank tab on the chest. Everyone tried to get hold of one because they were so much better than the issue stuff. The bergen could be the A-frame we were still using in the late 80's, or more likely a private purchase. Or he could be a masochistic eccentric and be using a '58 Pattern large pack!

Hi Richard. Yup. He's definitely wearing the windproof smock and trousers, and that looks like the canvas A-frame bergen. WW2 vintage but still being used when I joined in 1989. His belt kit is standard '58 pattern.

Hi Windy.
Thanks for clearing up my query.I was thinking of the ww2 bergen.I read somewher that the SBS guys used to sit on bergens in the canoes or whatever they were in.
Thanks for responding.
Richard

Sorry guys but the back pack looks to me like it might be the small Norwegian back pack (Norge pack) which was private purchase we used for lightweight ski patrols in Norway. Could be wrong of course but its about the same size and colour.

I do believe you're correct! Looking at it again it's too small to be the A-frame. Mind you, they weren't particularly big either but they were still a considerable improvement on the Large Pack. At least you could fit a doss-bag in them!

Hi Guys.
Thanks for your continued thoughts and observations,Will try and find some Norwegian pack images.
Cheers all.

The rucksacks were like commercial camping rucksacks aluminium frame, different from a Bergen. There are a few pics on the Canbera showing it, it was the norm for the Mountain Cadre guys at the time.
