RP Models 1/9th Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert 'Blondie' Hassler

Started on this 'old' but great bust (?) of the leader of the cockershell heroes - Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert 'Blondie' Hassler.
Thought i would see what all the hype/fuss is with painting the flesh with oil paints and am i converted ! Followed the colour recipe and technique by Milan Dufek and really happy with the results so far. Hair and moustache painted with scale artist acrylics.

Looking good so far, I must admit, oils for the larger scales works very well. Look forward to seeing more.

Looks very good so far Steve. Colour transitions are good, and the palette works well. I must admit I prefer oils for busts. I used to be an "oily" on all figures, but I'm going the other way and slowly warming to acrylics . A tip (for what it's worth) - I use a decorator's product called Terebine Dryers with oils. Just a dab in your mix will help it dry overnight. Doesn't affect colours and a 500ml bottle (about four quid) will last you for ever.

The smell and the long drying times (and the gloss finish, I've painted military vehicles for 40+ years..) always put me off trying oils, but since I've been more into figure painting I've started to consider it. Looking forward to your progress on this piece Steve. Will you add a water surface base to display him?

Phil, thanks for the info, i just like the way i can blend on the figure with the oils. dad of paint and blend it in with a dry brush.

Nap - nope wont be the last, maybe the first of many. Will probably still use acrylics on the clothing though, as i have loads of ScaleColor Artist tubes

No smell with the windsor ones, well none i have noticed any how, if i paint at night, they dry by the next evening, plus I can just start on another part of whatever i am painting.
Yep I am hoping to put the completed item into a 'bit of water on a plinth.

More work on Blondie, his left eye took 4 goes to get right - Grrr, right eye - straight away, which is unusual as normally the right eyes are harder to paint.





Suppose the one advantage of oils is a quick swipe with some turps and its all gone, only downside to this is you need to leave it for a few hours before you try again.

On the final length now, water effects to add, build the sea and should be all good.









Vallejo Water Texture added, it will (eventually) dry clear, which is a sort of a shame as the white stuff is what i am after;

its now on the rough seas. need to add some whiter horses and thats that. seascape from wilko ready mixed filler. colours applied while it was still pliable. daylight lamp turned down to add some moonlight

You've really cracked on with this piece , was wondering about the water effects ...coming on nicely

Have you used a varnish on the clothing ? ....

Why not enter a piece into the class of your choice in our AUGUST's FOTM comp and also vote in JULY classes as well

....And enter in Vignettes & Diorama #3 running till 31/01/22 ...msg me if needed

water effects - on his smock - Ammo of MIG Water effects - its a bit smelly. The water on the paddle and the foam on the boat are Vallejo Water texture - dries clear, which is a shame as would have liked it to stay as it was when first put on, but heyho - https://acrylicosvallejo.com/en/product/hobby/diorama-effects/transparent-water-26201/

Thanks, will post some photos later. The horses are on lol, and the water has had a top coat of vallejo wet effects.
