Nap asked if I would post my build of this on the V bench so here goes. Please be gentle with me, I've never painted any 'orses before!
This is such a big project that I thought I'd treat it as a series of separate projects. Ponies first, then the Chariot, next Boudica and her Charioteer and finally the two Romans I've bought to add some context.
I suspect I'll end up doing other projects as well as a sort of sidebar to enable me to step away from this for a while.
Anyway, first job was to clean up the mould lines from the ponies, not that there were many of them. As to be expected the casting quality and detail is superb.
Once cleaned I assembled three main body parts of each pony together with super glue
Bit more work today, did some filling with liquid green stuff. Once it had dried I washed the parts off, dried again and then primed the ponies to show up any other areas for clean up....that's tomorrow's job
Little bit more done today. Filled and sanded back the blow holes on the back of one of the horses, then airbrushed them in their base colour. It was a Citadel one Skalen Brown layer, looks chestnut to me.
One valuable lesson learnt today, Citadel paints do not like being mixed with Mr Hobby thinner, you get a sort of liquid green stuff texture......but not as smooth! Used Tamiya X20A thinner and it was fine.
I've been experimenting with different paints for the ponies and finally settled on Vallejo Model air. I used black for the shadows around the legs and a mixture of brown, dark brown and light brown to achieve the final finish. The eyes were picked out in black and a mix of light brown and ivory was used on the hooves. All of this (with the be exception of the mane, the eyes and the hooves) was done using airbrush. I use an airbrush a lot for plastic Kits but it's the first time ive used one for this kind of thing, so that's been a learning curve as well. In the pictures the horses look a bit shiney, but that's only because the Matt varnish I used was still a bit wet when I took the photos.
