a little more shade and you're done

Good start.
But i think you have to give up shading with black. Try to use the complementaire colors.
Then fade the colors out. Then it would not look to stripery?????? (dark lines).
at least you have a steady hand, and you can paint between the line's. And that's something i can't say from myself.
