Hi Guys,

Here is the second part of the SBS thread I start a couple of weeks ago.

Here is the link to part 1.

http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/sculpting-sbs-part-one.68891/

Stu asked me if I would do an SBS of a piece I was Sculpting for Stormtrooper Miniatures.
This stage takes it through to the end. It shows how I approach the posing of the piece and the sculpting of the body and weaponry and equipment.

I will add the final picture as a preview on this the sculpting section.

It's not a definitive answer to sculpting, it's just the way I do it.

Thanks for looking. I hope you gain something from it.

Interesting Carl, and thanks for sharing these!

Right.....Questions:
Is the head baked prior to adding to the armature?

Do you part-bake any of rest of the sculpt?

And making sure I phrase this correctly.......could you please post a photo of your sculpting tools

Hi Rob,

That's a bit forward Rob.....

Yes I bake/cure the head before I add the armature to it. The spine is already connected to the head.

Because the rest of the piece is sculpted in a Magic-Sculpt Duro mix I cure the piece all the time during the sculpting of the body.

I will will post a pic of the tools I use...:)

looks like it's already developed Gary!!!

Didn't expect it the rest of it to be done in MS/Duro!

What kind of time frame do you produce a complex bust like this in?

The time frame varies Rob.
This one has taken longer than usual, because of stopping to take pictures. In fact I had to remember to to stop and take them at certain points.

But usually it takes anything between 3 or 4 days to a week, 7 days. If I'm working on 2 or 3 pieces at the same time it varies a bit.

Hi Carl, thanks for posting this mate.
I am assuming the neck is done at this stage also?
Is it easier to do the straps inMS/Duro rather than thin plasticard?

Barrie.

Hope you don't mind me making a point, but I think anyone interested in sculpting figures or busts should ring up Alec Tiranti Ltd and ask them to send you a catalogue. They are a sculptural suppliers and their catalogue is full of useful information about tools, materials etc.
Best wishes, Gary.
