scars and wound horse?

Any ideas on how to represent old scars on a black horse and new wounds, I am thinking very dark red in the fur? Any ideas welcome?

On dark horses the old scars are not as noticable unitl you and at the hari around the old wound. On dark horses the hair would become white, outlining the wound, On lighter color horses, the old wound would show up as a dark area again with some white hair aournd would but less thatn on a dark horse.
