Update:

Work on the tartan is mostly finished. The details are further down in this post.
----

I'm working on a new project for a friend. This is Pegaso's bust of a Scottish Gentleman (also listed as Highlands Gentleman). It's 1:9 scale. I've just begun work on the face.

I've seen some good examples on tartan painting on this site. My plan is to adapt the step by step posted by Quang several years ago. Tartan posting. Although if anyone else has advice I'd be happy to hear it.

I don't have a specific time period for the figure, although clan tartans were not really established until the mid 1800's.

Minor Update: So I managed to put another hour or two into the project and then I had to leave town... again. Needless to say, the model is proceeding slowly. I did some more work on the face: tweaking the shadows, going another couple shades lighter with some highlights, and painted the lips, ears, and neck. Although you cannot tell from the photographs, I also added a gloss finish to the eyes and a semi-gloss to the lips.

I began the base green for the tartan. I will post pictures as soon as there is something worth showing. I'd like to show each step along the way (for better or worse).

In the meantime, I was hoping to get some advice on the hair. My friend had requested the hair be auburn. Does anyone have paint/mix suggestions for achieving this? I'm using vallejo paints and I'm not quite sure how to get the right mix of red/brown for the hair.

I've had a chance to work on the tartan. As I mentioned earlier, I'm following Quang's step by step.

To begin, I'm trying to paint the Bisset tartan (see the link above for an online catalog of family and organization tartans).

I started by painting the entire tartan in the green base color. I then added the blue lines (mixing 50/50 the blue with the green). When the blue lines intersected I painted it 100% in the blue.

I then started the long process of adding all of the secondary colors. I began with red and followed it with black. I started with a red/green mix, where it crossed the blue patches I used red/blue. And finally just red where the lines intersected. The black followed the same process, now adding in a black/red mix where appropriate.

Between the blue and the black lines is a joint yellow and black line. I approached this by first adding the additional black line and then painted the yellow with no gap between the two. Finally I painted the white lines down the center of each blue strip.

I did some cleanup on the lines along the way, but for my own sanity I tried to save the real nit picking work until the end. The following pictures show a more finished tartan. The fringe is finished and the clean up work is mostly done (though I'll probably keep making small tweaks until I hand it over).

I also did more work on the head and I'm just about ready to finish assembling the figure. Thanks for following my work and, as always, any suggestions or thoughts are welcome!

Here is the completed bust:

I'm happy with the end result, although I think it will be a little while before I opt to tackle a tartan again. Thanks for all the comments.
