Here is a sneak preview of the figure that will be the subject of the sculpting sbs. I have chosen to do a Corpsman, Army of Northern Virginia, 1863. Fellow Planet Figure member Jason Whitman was happy to model the subject and pose.

I'm interested what area(s) of sculpting are most important in seeing demonstrated? I would like to use Sculpey for the majority of the project as using putty would probably involve more carving than acyual sculpting. I may try to use both mediums to show the use of both.

I plan on starting the figure after vacation (including 4 days in Gettysburg) and or completion of my 54mm confederate (close to being done).~Gary

Gary, my friend, this is going to be another fabulous sculpture, I can tell.
Thanks for posting and for all your other contributions, it is sculptors like you that make the planet spin.

Keep up the great work and keep them coming.

Cheers
Roc.

Well Gary....I think it'll be great to see Jason's pose transferred gradually into a model figure...I love the choice of uniform too..and the way the pose draws so much interest to the jacket....

I would be happy to learn from any advice that you bring for us..and if you are using super sculpey, then I would be especially interested in watching how you layer it and avoid any unwanted surface reactions as your work is always so very clean...

I really look forward to this getting underway...

and enjoy your vacation...I'm sure you'll return inspired.

Roy.

Gary - this is going to be fabulous! I'm really looking forward to it! If you ask me what I want in the SBS, I can give you that in one word - Details! Remember that, for us novices, you absolutely can't tell us too much. You've forgotten more tricks to sculpting than I'll ever know.

You've probably already selected the scale you want to work in, but, if not, and again, just my personal 'druthers here, but 75mm or bigger? Obviously the larger the scale, the more sculpture features possible, the more the audience can see in photos, etc.

All the best,
Dan

excellent :)

BTW, is the ceiling low or is Jason just really tall !?
:lol:It's a "drop" ceiling. The pic was taken in the basement, in the kids "play" area. I wanted to take outside pictures, but it was cold and rainy that day...I'm a whimp!

Gary,
I can only envy you for being able to have a model
posed in the uniforms. I'm sure these pictures speed
up the process and give more realistic results.
I wish I had all the uniforms from WW2 era. :)

Taesung, Having gotten back into reenacting after a loooooong absence I can tell you being able to have someone model a correct uniform is a godsend. I was fortunate to have Jason "the GIANT" Whitman model the pose for me. I'm really looking forward to doing this project.~Gary

The pose looks great Gary. I'm interested in how you will tackle the problems of making this figure castable (that's the plan isn't it?) with the open jacket and the 'ackward' posing of the right arm and hat.

If you're going to use Sculpey I'd be most interested in seeing how you blend different applications (fresh as well as on backed applications). I find this very hard myself. To be honest I'd personally really like to see your techniques for carving cured MagicSculpt and the like, but I guess that is a tough thing to show in a SBS.

Anyway, still looking forward to the next step and thanks from all of us !

Hi Gary, I too envy you being able to sculpt from a life model. I just have to keep looking at my ugly mug in the mirror unfortunately  .

Look forwrd to watching this progress.

Regards Callum.

Guys, If there are any things that stand out that you would like to see in the figure sbs please post them as I'm going to start by the weekend with the figure. I hope to be able to have several pictures outlining the process that will number more than what we're normally given either in magazine or online. What I want to do is document the process step by step with as many pictures as possible without there being too many. Thanks for your interest.~Gary

Hey Gary,

Thanks for doing this sbs, I'm sure it will prove to be very helpful. I would be very interested in exactly how you approach the drapery (clothing). Reguardless, I'll be watching this thread intently! Thanks again.
