Hi there,

I'd like to know how do you guys sculpt hands. I want to share ideas to sculpt fingers and hands, in any scale 54mm, 75mm, 90mm, or 120mm whatever, because I think hands are as very important element as face and head.

so...to start off, I post my way to sculpt 90mm scale hands.

My style is based on Shep Paine's way he showed on his book "Building and Painting SCALE FIGURES", and I thought there's some room for improvement in his way and I modified his style a little bit.

Here, I used MAGIC-SCULPT and 0.3mm brass wires.

STEP1:First of all, put brass wire for thumb, and rolled it up with other 4 strings.

STEP2:Bend wires at the point of fist joints.

STEP3:Cut the wires. Note that rolling 4 finger wires on right hand has been done by the opposite direction. This step is very important because thumb bone should always be under other 4 fingers.

STEP4: Apply putty on it...

STEP5: Finish!

Any ideas?

and..If anyone know good reference website, please post the URL here.

Thanks for a reply gordy,

Are these for a particular project?

Yes. These are for the project now I'm working on, "90mm Royal Engineer (Sapper or Miner) in Crimean War". I will post the project in vBench thread later.

I have several WIP projects now :), but I want to focus on sculpting for a while. I feel like I'm losing my feel of painting these days...:)

Wow, you make it look really easy....
I have to try this one of these days (make that years probably with my production speed).
Thanks for posting!

Cheers,
Adrian

Kaz, these look great. I've had poor luck with using wire armature when I make hands.

When hands are holding something I prefer to sculpt them on the object. When they're free, I prefer to carve the hands from a dried block of putty.

Thanks a lot friends, Adrian, Daniel, John, Ben. I'm glad you like this thread.

I always love to know how others sculpt such things.
Me too, Ben. Since there's so many good references on sculpting heads and face I don't see many on hands so I just want to know other peoples tips.

Thanks a lot for your tips, John. Good advice!

Can't argue with the results when they're staring you in the face. Well done!

Cheers,

Glen

I love painting hands for some reason more than anythin else... and when they look like these even better ! superb hands !

Love the hand - yes feet and hands seem to get less 'exposure' than faces but all add to the feel of a figure
