For all the debate above.....
I was disapointed that he wasn't dressed as a German
auxilliary Cavalryman.

But it is a nice portrayal of the comic book genre.

Best wishes, it's a nice model.

Paul.

Thanks you Paul. It's impossible to please everyone. Not in this world of miniatures or any other. We've made the best possible figure according to Marini's comic book idea. But we take note of all this so that it does not happen again in the future. Thank you all for your comments.

Unfortunately many of Rome's enemies did not leave behind pictorial or written records of their existence and way of life (a t least not before they fully bacame Rome's successors and this is exactly what the Germans became after the fall of the western part of the empire and one might argue that they had started replacing the Romans long time before that). All representations we have of them come from Roman art and literature.Rome as the superpower of the time liked to "demonize" its enemies just like the US is doing today with its own enemies.Rome wanted to portray its enemies as uncouth, uncivilised barbarians who could not possibly partake in the Roman way of life and therefore they were no better than beasts that go to battle naked and growling. Before them,my ancestors the Greeks, liked to portray their enemies(the Persians) as fully clothed and particularly wearing clothes identical to the ones they usually attributed to amazons. The implication was clear: Persians are cowards for coming to battle clothed when the Greeks went naked and even worse, they are effeminate since they wear women's clothes.Of course we know today that the Persians were neither cowards nor effeminate. They were the creators of an empire and a great civilization. It is like that with the Germans. They were not what Rome portrayed them to be and I can sympathize with Martin. As I said in my initial post this is a lovely piece, well sculpted and cast but rather more "romantic in a Vicorian sense" than historical. This does not substract anything from its beauty or from the invetiveness and vision of the creator.
