Series 77 Franz Doring

Originally painted this as a commission when it was released nearly 50 years ago. Then it was probably painted in Humbrol or possibly Pelican Placca as I was experimenting at the time.

I don't remember it being such a pain to work with back then.
Maybe the fact i now only have one eye and my 70 year old hands are not so clever manipulating such a lump.

By today's standards the casting is really poor with few undercuts and bad positioning of joints.

It's a huge chunk of metal and there is shed loads of Milliput involved because of the poor fit.

I obtained this from ebay in 2013 and it has been on and off my bench since then.

Some discrepancies with the anatomy, very large right hand and feet and the face lacked detail considering its size.

Painted with various acrylics this time round and pleased to finally have it in my cabinet.

Thanks for sharing this , I have had a original sent from a friend in USA so your comments are interesting, hard to believe it was released so long ago ....despite the issues a imposing figure

......wonder who painted it ? , was it just on cover or a actual article ?

Your right of course ref hand but do like your colour choice on your version

Admirable work, given your visual condition. With one eye it’s difficult to see depth and to get the brush hitting the right place.
Nice colour choices as well. Nicer than the 1977 cover painting!

I have a Series 77 in the stash as well and looking forward to build and paint it, despite the issues.

Fine piece of work. I couldn't imagine painting with one eye as I have trouble putting toothpaste on my brush with one eye closed (eye drops). Did this figure also not too long after release (one of my first). I repainted it about 20 years ago. Incredibly heavy as it is a metal casting and 154mm. Took it to work to show a co-worker and my eventual wife wanted to know if the crossbow crank worked; she tried it and fortunately I was able to find it after it landed on someone else's desk. Series 77 got me started in figure painting and I always enjoyed them. The 154mm Pirate figure is still waiting to be done. I really do like your rendition.

Nap, I too would like to get hold of "All for a Kings Shilling" . If anyone has one in their stash maybe we could do a deal hint, hint. I tried to get Walter Plank as well but not seen one in metal. There was a resin copy done under license I believe but the only one I have seen for sale was at a ridiculously high price. Currently one on ebay US for $160. As for the crossbow, the original was so out of scale I cou,d not bring myself to use it. It looked like a toy and spoiled the look. The scratch build may not be the best but it looks better to me and that's what counts.

Nice figure! I too recall seeing this casting advertised back in the 70's when I was a teen. I loved the Series 77 figures, they were a step up from the Imrie Risley line.

One of my favorite Series 77 vignettes was the Roman legionnaire and Gaul in the casting "And so on the road from Rome . . . " I worked very hard on that and I still like seeing it on my shelf, although my skills were nowhere near yours.
