Just put together Stormtoopers sgt Masterson and about to start painting.
This is my first 120mm as a favour for a friend so wish me luck.
My question is.....
Were the jackets scarlet or red at the time .
I know the would have faded with wear and time but what colour did they start with. the box art looks very
Orange to me.

Any Vallejo paint mixes will be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance as I know I can count on some help from the people on this forum.

Sergeants jackets were scarlet but not as fine a quality as the officers' scarlet jackets. I agree with you that the box art is a little too orange. Other ranks jackets were definitely red, described as having a slight brick red tendency. I'm afraid that as an oil painter I can't advise on mixes.

Vallejo 70817 Scarlet would do pretty well. Officers coats could be very orange, and very bright , because they used cochineal as the dyestuff .
But I am sitting next to a pair of curtains made of ( modern ! ) Sergeant's cloth , and I would describe the colour as on the scarlet side of red.

Cheers gentlemen
Have gone for Vallejo scarlet with a touch of brown sand as a base coat to fade it slightly.
Looks ok.
Will add orange red to highlight.

Officer's jackets were of superfine quality (to start with), and other ranks a dull red. Sergeants had higher quality jackets than the other ranks.
