As I was rooting thru my gray army, I happened across a couple of spare Shenandoah figures that might look good together on a base. I'd like to paint one as a Union sniper. I did a google search but I'm not sure if it answered my main question while raising another. First, did the Berdan sharpshooters have any insignia on their caps? I did find a photo from some collection somewhere showing a faded green cap with a red diamond on top. Is this it? Also, I found that their knapsacks were of a Prussian design different from the regular infantry issue. Is there a drastic difference between the Prussian & US knapsacks of the time? Normally, I'm not a stickler for extreme historical accuracy but I do like to at least be in the ballpark. Thanks in advance for your help.

I just happen to have Echoes of Glory the Union Army in front of me and yes, there is a photo of an original sharpshooters forage cap with a red III Corps diamond.
I'll see what I can find about the knapsacks.

Roger,

Thanks for your help & the link. I think everything will be pretty accurate historically. This project will be 3 or 4 projects down the road but at least now, I know what I'm doing.

Thanks again,

Mike
