Hi all,

I am painting the Pegaso Miles Christi Crusader Knight 12th and wanted to ask could someone help me with a shield design. I have painted the shield with acrylic paint and was wondering how I should go about putting a design on it. Should I draw the patern in pencil, ink markers or some other medium? The shields been painted matt red. Any help would be much apreciated.

Thanks all.

Hi Donald, if you have any coloured pencils they work quite well for this, if not you can use a normal pencil but sketch lightly and watch out for shiny graphite lines being left behind after you're done.

Hey Donald,

If you use a pencil, be careful so that you won't need the eraser. Geez, what a mess that causes  .

Hi Donald.

Did my first shield on a Pegaso Late Roman
I used pencil to mark the outline using a paper template then painted the design in acrylics;

Had no problems with the pencil showing through in the end........

hope this helps

Hi Rob,

Thanks very much indeed for your kind help. I think the design on the roman shield is simply fantastic. I wouldn't mind seeing the finished shield. I'm just a bit worried I may lift the paint off. The trouble I'm haveing at the moment is trying to find some shield designs on the net.

Very best regards - have a nice day.

Hi Don

here's the finished piece:

What I did was paint the design in acrylics on acrylics.........drying fast is a great advantage, and had no problems lifting the paint; I then varnished it in Andrea matt acrylic varnish before weathering it in oils.

Hi there -
I asked a similar question in regard to tapestry designs for a samurai figure - check out my vBench for the discussion there - there are some good ideas from the forum members you may wish to consider.

Hi Paul ,

Thanks a lot for your help. Didn't realize how hard it would be to find shield designs for the Miles Christi Knight. Am I correct in assumeing it is from the crusade period? Seen your samurai figurine. What can I say - really brilliant art work, the armour is first class. The wife won't let me paint in oils because she said they smell to much. Final word - awsome. Can't wait to see it finished.

Kind regards - have a nice day.

I didn't quite get the gist of your last post GI Jones but I think you were asking if the Samurai was from the same time as the crusades. The Pegaso figure is circa 1100 - 1200 but could cerainly have been seen later than that.

Finding heraldry for knights is not as easy as it sounds. To be historically accurate (or at least a well educated guess) takes a lot of research. Sure it is easy to just whack a great big cross on a crusader's shield but sometimes we just want something a little bit fancy to make the project more interesting.

I spent a lot of time and money on Verlinden's Knight at Agincourt. I had to find heraldry from a French knight, on horseback, who most probably was killed during the battle. It doesn't help that the kit is made up as an English knight - given that the english fielded no cavalry at the battle! If you have a particular interest in a period - hunt down some of the Osprey books - I know that there are some crusade titles out there.
Your next project could be based on another image from a book in which the heraldry is to your liking.
I have saved a lot of money by using one good reference book for several projects.

And don't forget public libraries!!!!
Carpo (who has now finished waffling on and on.) :)

Hi Paul ,

Thanks a lot for the info - much appreciated. Sorry for the confusion. I'll certainly look into the Osprey books - sounds like a good idea.

Very best regards - have a nice day.
