There are a number of ships' boats available for the marine modeller. Victory Miniatures produces a number of RN figures from Nelson's day. I have done the side of a launch with three thwarts (seats) as an alternative base for a small vignette. Ships' boats varied. They were as likely to be sailed as rowed. Cutters and pinnaces were mainly used for transporting personnel, but launches could be used for transporting barrels, they often had anchors slung beneath them if a ship needed to kedge off an unfavourable shore, or could even carry cannons slung underneath them for army support or mount naval cannons. A 34 ft launch would weigh several tons and swinging them off the ship was not an easy task involving yard arms, blocks and tackle and lots of rope.

Hopefully Keith will be able to put this into mould this week. I am currently working on an oar and a couple of oarsmen.

Happy modelling,

Mike

Hi Mike

Lovely conversion work on the figure , impressively dressed as well , will you add one to each seating position?

This will certainly look impressive when painted

Look forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime

The hull side was made to match the Panart kit of an 'Armed Pinnace', which is actually an armed launch. The thwarts (seats) are a little too wide in order to keep the space between them the same as in the kit, and should be narrowed, in which case a couple of oarsmen could be added. Alternatively one oarsman with a shouting petty officer might also be possible.
