Been going through my secondary box of oils ,you the ones with the gunged up lids which won't screw on any longer .

Came across a small tube of ultramarine I was also hoping to find an ancient tube of viridian green which used to lurk in there but alas its gone .

Now given the high cost of some of the colours you might only use occasionally ; such as viridian ,alizarin and some of the cadmiums I was wondering what ever became of these small tubes you used to be able to buy singulary and now only seem to be available in naff starter paint sets

It’s starter sets only, samples...those 37ml tubes of pigments do last tho and can be considered investments..ultramarine is dirt cheap..as often is alizarin- but do remember it’s not lightfast..Quinacridone versions are tho..and dry faster..

Ha ha..I have always figured that we need be more alert to colour sinking than lightfastness..for our lifetimes..besides the real stuff seems better at mixing..and as we usually mix into stuff that is faster drying and use thin layers..it’s all good

As far as sets are concerned, check Williamsburg..it’s excellent quality and they have six or so sets..you get small tubes of colours, plus a 37 of ti white..

Just a suggestion: Buy some empty tubes for oil paint or even smaller for medical ointments. Split the cost of the oil paint you want with 3-4 painter friends and divide the paint into the empty tubes.
