Hey guys.....I'm working on a major conversion/scratchbuild and need some help. I'm using the torso from a Verlinden 120mm Iraqi Freedom figure and I've carved off the CamelBak, the straps for it, and the hood of the chemical suit molded on it as well.
Iwas wondering what you guys use to smooth out large surfaces like that, being that it's covered with the obviously visible marks from the details I've been carving off. I've used some diamond files to level it all out, but what about the scratches, gouges, etc? Steel wool? Any other tricks? Sorry, I've never had to try to salvage something so big before, usually I'm just working with 1/35th. Thanks guys...

I use sanding sticks in various coursness, and to polish it off once its smooth I use super fine Steel Wool. It will get you a nice, smooth surface to work with.

Like Anders I use sanding sticks, as well as small sheets of wet 'n' dry paper or sanding film. Are you trying to get back to a smooth finished surface (with wrinkles or other details) or smooth out just to sculpt on top of?

I use steel wool a bit myself too, but only for final smoothing, not for any major removal of material.

Thanks

Thanks for the tips Einion and Anders. My files and sanding sticks have it almost to the point I need it at, but like both of you said some fine steel wool should do the trick. Thanks again guys.....
