Apart from modelling my other major hobby is digital photography and editing. Alas as with many things I don’t get around to doing as much of it as I would like. However, I have been playing around with various cheap editing packages recently. I use a combination of both GIMP and Google’s Picasa. Between them you can achieve some very interesting effects. Perhaps not Photoshop standard but good enough I think. At the moment I use a Canon EOS 400D with a variety of lens’. When I have the money I will upgrade but for the moment this is a mid-range camera.

This is a bust of Major James McCudden VC. I have applied a variety of filters and increased focus on the face.

This is a picture of the RAF Cadet College at RAF Cranwell. It has been filtered and the edges softened to age the picture.

This is a Hawker Hurricane at the RAF Museum at Cosford. It has had a HDR effect added and then the colours have been inverted. It is now my header picture for my history blog and its Facebook page.

This is a shot taken at the Imperial War Museum. It is a 15 inch shell with part of the Berlin Wall in the background. It focusses on the tip of the shell. It has been edited to bring the colours into focus.

Similar effect to the Hurricane above. This is the front section to the Avro Lancaster at the Imperial War Museum. If you look closely you can see the reflection of the Supermarine Spitfire in the glazing at the front. I would like to say that it was an inspired shot but it was luck!
All of these were done using Picasa. The following shows what can be done using GIMP. It is a picture I took last year while I was at West Point last year. It shows how you can do selective colourisation. This picture was taken on the Saratoga battlefield.

At some point I will try to write down my methods for using both of these editing packages. Until then I hope you enjoy the pictures. Comments welcome.
