I found this old wind up alarm clock a couple months ago, I threw away all of the clock parts because I decided I didn't need them and I decided to keep the body and see if I could use it to make a nice little Space Age vignette. I decided to use an automotive headlamp lens polish to see if I could clear up the scratches on the acrylic window. It actually got a pretty great result.

Interesting base choice, always nice to use something off the beaten track. Will watch this develop with interest.

Cheers Simon

I glued and screwed some wood pieces to the backplate from the original clock and used about half a tube of Testor's contour putty to fill in the gaps. I've got loads of the stuff and this seems like a good way to waste it.

I lined the interior with thin styrene. Now the next thing to do is sculpt the figure and start putting things together

Aesthetically I want to draw some inspiration from classic science fiction art styles of the 50s-70s. I like the work of artists like Virgil Finlay, Norman Saunders, Rafael De Soto and the classic covers of Astounding Science Fiction. I also like the look of movies like Forbidden Planet and TV Shows like UFO.

Since I'd left my spare parts box behind when I moved out from my parent's place I took some pieces from the cheapest kits I could find at my local hobby shop.

This figure is going to be some kind of space lady. She's still a work in progress. I'm consulting fashion magazines for costume ideas.

That all looks pretty interesting, there is probably going to be a lot of nostalgia accompanying this thread! Pintrest has recently been throwing up stills from old Sci fi series for me, again interesting!

I've been making some progress this weekend. I feel almost ready for paint. I'm not really sure how I'll attach the mesh floor. I'll figure something out, I'm thinking of making some kind of bracket out of styrene. Other than that, I don't really feel like I need to add more detail. I could add some pipes and wires I guess, but other than that I'm happy and don't want to overdo it.

I will need to add a handle for this lady to hold on to. I'll probably use a resistor for that. Her hair and costume will be in equal measure inspired by pictures I find in old fashion magazines and by the kind of art work you would see on old pulp magazines and novels. For that reason I'm thinking I'll paint everything in oils. That's what most of the pulp illustrators used, and it makes sense for me to do the same for this project.

Coming along a treat I reckon a plastic strut is the way ahead on the mesh floor. The figure is coming along nicely as well, will she be weightless or is the artificial gravity?

Cheers Simon

She's going to be weightless, which is why she needs a handle to grab onto. I'll use that to conceal a wire going into the backplate.

Another very intriguing and innovative project, enjoying seeing this develop.

Hi

This is definitely a very unusual project and the WIP is interesting to follow

Look forward to seeing more on the lady build and her position when in place

Have FUN @ the bench

I started painting the inside. First an undercoat with acrylics, then the oils. Among other things I added a resistor which I plan to use as a handle.

After some deliberation I decided to give the lady baggy space pants. I'm also debating whether to giver her a sword or make some kind of raygun for her. Both make sense in this context. This is inspired by pulp cover artwork, and there are plenty of examples of swords appearing in everything from Frazetta's artwork to Buster Crabbe's Flash Gordon.

That looks really good, the right aesthetic for illustrations of that time, looking forward to seeing the young lady develop.

Cheers Simon

It's coming together,Everything's starting to come together. I made the ray gun she's holding out of a 1:35 scale German mortar shell. There's still quite a bit of work to be done. I've got a few finishing touches to do on the space ship, and I'll be sculpting her hair tomorrow if all goes well.
