Its so hard to tell whether people want criticism or just encouragement.
I agree Janne.
Maybe someone can come up with an Icon that can be easily clicked on the side, like the smilies that says critique me allowing members to give the proper advice in the true PF manor.

Jeff,

Thank you for your reaction. I followed the link to your topic which I regretably must have missed when you posted it. You are right that giving critique to someone's work is a very delicate job. There is a big difference between honest constructive commenting and plain rudeness. This last one I would not tolerate or endure either, let there be no mistake.

I hope every Planeteer understands that I started the topic because I LOVE COMMUNICATING AND DISCUSSING with fellow entousiasts about our little tin men here on the PlanetFigure. It is just that I missed this here the last few months. And sometimes I feel a bit reluctant by the fact that already ten or more members reacted only very cheerfull on a shown figure, while I see some things that 'in my opinion' could use some extra care. I am afraid that my constructive criticism could fall wrongly on such a moment. But reading all the replies I nevertheless will give it a try and see what comes from it. Hopefully I wil not get everybody on top of me then.

Best regards

Johan ;)

Hi all!

I myself living here up north and here is no model shows and only couple of fellow fig modellers. Pf is the best place to get critique eyed comments about my sculpted and painted figs. As I some point come "blind" to my work it's good to have place where you can get comments, good or bad. Critique is best way to know what you have done good and where you can improve. So feel free to comment my figs and if you think it's too rough to public eye then e-mail me.

Just my 10cents

Cheers Mikko

Johan ,

I think everyone understood what you were trying to say. I am gald you chose to start the thread. I think I just need to say one word in defense of the( That is really great) sort of post. We have here on the Planet some of the best sculptors and painters in the world. Some of whom are recognized World Masters. There are times when one of them will post something and there is little else to say then "That is truly beautiful work." I do not think this is bad thing. I am glad to see some of that work. Especially if it is going in to a private collection and may never be seen at a show or in print. In those cases I think praise is about the only responce I can usually come up with.

Best
Jeff

PS

Always feel free to critique any thing I might post. It is the only way to learn and get better at what we do.

Excellent topic and excellent posts even when they went off on a tangent.
Nothing is more valuable than constructive criticism when it comes NOT from a peer but from someone with the credentials to back it up. Except for the sculpters among us most of this field is technical. We assemble a kit, clean it up and then are faced with the technical problem of bringing it alive with paint. Some among us know oils inside out...some know arcylics...some are so knowledgeable they mix mediums. Constructive criticism from these sources with detailed info on how to get the effect is invaluable. I'd welcome it now as strongly as I did 30 years ago.

Being careful not to 'offend' ends up a negative. A friend of mine ( an exceptionally talented painter with many Golds in his laurels ) if shown a beginners or journeyman's below average work usually made the comment: " I can see you worked very hard on this. " He felt good because he didn't hurt anyone's ego and the painter's ego was given a positive pat on the back. In reality they both lose.
Life is too short for such nonsense.
