I find it therapeutic and rewarding most of the time. I also have recurrent depressive disorder so having a hobby where while I'm painting I'm not listening to those negative thought but actually focused on what I'm doing is great for helping me keep it in check.

In my case to unintentionally bugger up perfectly good models. I am sure it is the creative juices in all of us.

Because we want to paint the best figure once in a lifetime. (for me, I keep trying, but I know it should never happen). But this is what I like to do in my spare time.

As realistic as those models look, they are very large scale and then the natural lights and shades come into play to help make things look realistic. In my opinion they are not all that brilliant paint jobs. Good, but not mind-blowingly. Large scale helps.
The sculpts are excellent though.

I have always felt the need to challenge myself.However,I no longer feel the need for competition in anything.The great work I see here on PF always give me something to shoot for;and that is my on going challenge.And that my friends is why I paint miniatures.

Also as Adrian mention, these pictures are smaller than actual size as where our figures usually are bigger than actual size in the pictures.
