I found on the web this beautiful photo of 1944 somewhere in Italy, a British soldier and an Italian woman on a break in the war

Nice photo - interesting to see that as a Warrant Officer Class 2 he’s managed to find himself a pair of officer’s quality light coloured puttees. The IWM photo archive is full of little gems like this.

ahh, great analysis, do you have any pictures of this?

The wristband on his right wrist indicates his rank, Mandreas. He’s a Warrant Officer Class 2, & the wreath encircling the brass crown on it shows that he’s a Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant so would be responsible for issue of clothing, stores, rations etc. & in a position to obtain the odd item of better-quality kit for himself......hence the officer’s puttees.

Thank you Chris, very interesting how a photo can give so many clues, if a person is expert :)

One thing I find quite ironic about the photograph is the fact that an RQMS is featured in it wearing a Khaki Flannel shirt with the sleeves cut down for shirt sleeve order.............it’s ironic because I once handed in 2 KF shirts for exchange myself which had been tailored by having the sleeves similarly cut down by a tailor, & the RQMS went into orbit & threatened to charge me for damage to Government property - the irony was that whilst he was yelling at me he was wearing a similarly tailored shirt himself.

Haha Chris that is funny,it wasn't through Maj Batty Bateman was it or through an RMP RQMS,so funny

Looking at his puttees too,we always had to have the tail piece attached to the tape over our ankles,no escaping the wrath if seen otherwise!!!!
