You just need to represent some strips of burlap cut or ripped from an old sandbag to break up the distinctive outline and avoid shine. Here is a rifle for one of those 1/6th scale dolls but the principle is the same: Mosin Nagant M1891/30 (wood & métal) sniper rifle w/ camo strips DID Corp - Machinegun (machinegun-figures.com)

You're right indeed! I didn't have a rifle to do it (I mean, I did, but at 1/35 scale is too small), so used it on the periscope instead...
