Ok Guys this is serious !

What color of hair did Spartans have in general, I have been told they were
Fair haired and blue eyed,as were the Greeks before Turkish invasion,
this is out of my usual period of Napoleonic so any info most welcome:unsure:

Ronnie, as i told you before, noone has ever seen a blond haired Spartan, and we all know that the Turks did not invade Sparta until the Glasgow Fair holidays two years ago.
What exactly is it with you and Spartan Hair? Is this something people should be warned about??????

Er, no.

Blonde hair was certainly seen in these areas in Classical antiquity but I think we can take it from the epics that it was noteworthy, and therefore not common and certainly not the usual colour.

I think dark brown and black would have been the most common hair colours at the time, matched with brown or hazel eyes.

When fair hair and eyes was referenced by the ancient Greeks and Romans, it was invariably the Celtic and Germanic tribes that they were speaking of.

Didn't know your lot played in Turkey two years ago:awesome:

Been doing a lot of searching for hair colour in Spartan times for you. Google states your name as an expert on Greek hair (go figure).
Cant find much about blond hair Ronnie and apart from Black and Brown the only other to get a mention was Menelaus, King of Sparta who as you know was husband to Helen of Sparta, and brother to Agamemnon. He is noted by Agamemnon as being unusual as he had Red hair.
Sorry mate but still cant find much on blondes.

Don

The Romans were so enamored by the blond and red hair seen among the Celtic tribal foes that it became a fad in ancient Rome for women in particular to color their hair with a henna rinse or bleach it with quicklime or wood ash, in an attempt to mimic those colors.

She could have been of Brazilian decent?
Carl.
That would explain a war being fought over her!
