I'm now sure Naval & Military Press reprinted it but I can't get on their website here.

Carl, Jon just seen your posts, same problem, can't open the links here but it must be the book I'm thinking of. Cheers.

Deeds that thrill the empire was a book, it's a boys own illustration of the first world war, but I've always been taken with the title so "borrowed" it for the series.

I highly recommend searching for the illustrations though, they really do depict some amazing scenes of valour and they are beautiful drawings.

Just had a look Darren. You're right it does.

Picked up the Spion Kop Deeds that Thrill at Oundle from Darren.

It is a great vignette that captures the difficult terrain for seeking cover from the effective fire of the Boers. However for me it sums up Tommy Atkins willingness to "do or die". Spion Kop seems more Isandlwana than Rorke's Drift to me but still a deed that can thrill.

There's an interesting filmed tour of the battlefield on youtube. Just do a search on their site for "Spion Kop" and you should be able to find it. It was done for South African TV and the tour guide is the narrator. I think it may have been originally been one complete show, but its posted on youtube in 8 short (approx. 9-8 min. long segments.

I can't see the pictures!!!!! Why me????
Brian
Hi Brian sorry you can't see the images I did upload them as per photobucket but perhaps one of the interweb Wizards on PF could advise me if I've done it wrong cos I can still see the pictures but that might because I uploaded them.

However can you see this image

Yep,I can see all the prints not the figures though.I'll just have to wait and see them in the flesh.

Firefly website defaults to Tommy's War. Any clues?

Firefly Models was my old company that sold (amongst others Tommy's War, Black Dog etc etc).

Earlier this year I decided to only work on Tommy's War and to not sell other manufacturers figures due to family and work commitments.

Deeds that Thrill the Empire is something I did in 2012, the sculptor is Steve Warrilow and the production is the same as Tommy's War. Due to the time frames involved in developing a range of figures it ended up being released at a bad time for me (lots and lots going on) so I never really got the opportunity to devote as much time to the project as I would have liked.

One of the problems with a release like this is that it's 5 figures plus a base, so I pay the sculptor for 5 sculpts, the caster for 5 sets of everything and then produce packaging etc. So, it's a great idea to do a diorama like this but the investment is high and (as the sell price is higher as its 5 figures) the demand lower than when producing single figures. So the upshot is that the manufacturer ends up with a longer return on investment, which is 2012 coincided with me doing lots of things (too much).

In 2013 I've been wrapped up with family and work again, plus a big release at Euro for Tommy's War (which has been quite complex and time consuming). So, I've still not really had time to devote to DTTTE (and the funding issue remains the same)

However, I still think the project/brand has potential and it's something I'd like to revisit in 2014 (but properly this time in terms of promotion). I still have 8 (I think) Spion Kop diorama's left which I'll bring to Euro. Once I get this new Tommy's War project out of the way I'll rethink DTTTE, I've had really good feedback from those that have the diorama, and I think it's in the right direction but needs some refinement in how I bring it to market to really work.

So, to answer the original question, DTTTE is a trading brand under the Tommy's War name. Imagine Tommy's War being the company and then trading as Tommy's War and Deeds that Thrill the Empire. DTTTE isn't available on the Tommy's War website, it's really only available directly from me or at shows, but if I do continue the range next year then I'll make it available online.

When I originally posted this as news it was with a different user name (I since lost that, so had to re-register), so can't relist the images, so here they are again:

My apologies for the poor photography, I will try and do some new images. My photography has improved, promise!

I really should try and get a set painted in time for Euro, however:

1. I never finish any figures, so a set of 5 stands no chance
2. If I did get it finished my standard is so poor I would be dismissed from Euro in disgrace and asked never to return
3. I'm having sleepless nights getting the new Tommy's War releases finished in time, I don't need any more stress in my life right now

So, enjoy the poor photography, but the set will be available to see (in its unpainted state) at Euro.

I have been working on this, and am ready for the finishing touches on the groundwork. I have littered the trench section with expended brass and intend to add bits of equipment and helmets and what not. Can anyone tell me whether 2/Lancashire Fusiliers had lanyards on the bugle and if so what color?
