I decided to use jute garden twine. Cheap and more realistic looking. Just unwind the three strands and run a brass brush across the strands.
 
I thought I'd chip in to say that I've got a War World Scenics pro grass box and it's brilliant. I'll admit that I got it from a friend of mine who had it for wargaming but wasn't using it much, it's far better than any static grass applicator I've used though. I use it for small bases with tiny dabs of glue to create tufts. I find with static grass that once it has dried it's worth giving it a light coat of paint with a brush or airbrush to take off some of the shine and add a little variety to the colour. It's also worth using different lengths, I start small then add longer grasses until it looks 'right'. I find the tufts you can buy look ok but tend to be a bit too regular for my liking.

As an alternative, Martin Welburg makes grass mats which you can rip pieces off to add to your work, they look pretty good to me.
