Interesting article Kamil. I have never done solk stockings but have heard you can reach similar results with washs

I would take the intended colour of the stocking to be and mix flesh into it. Depending on the stocking clad area and the stretch of the fabric the more flesh.
Building up highlights and shadows with the different colours. The lace recieving almost pure colour due to its higher thickness.

I can also recomend some magazines where you may study the way stay ups behave as well as skincolour. ;)

Its a fine day when you can go to the nudie-bar and call it research.

Yeah, but think about the cost! In one's no less. Ahhhhh, the things we figure painters do to achieve 100% accuracy.

I used Janne's method on some of the old "Phoenix Follies" ladiies. It worked quite well. If you need any ideas I have a pile of wallpapers on my hd that I can get to you for ideas. My wife won't let me put them up. LOL LOL. Just call it "reference material".

One way I use for painting stockings is the following

I paint the leg area (covered by the stocking) in the usual way in flesh i.e. usual base, shadows, highlights etc. After this task is complete I then mix up the colour of the stocking and use very very thin washes over the painted leg area. You need to be careful and ensure that the washes are very thin and flow over then entire area in a uniform way. The secret is to get more of a 'colour' in the folds and creases e.g. if the leg is bent - behind the knee etc and a more transparent tint over the rest of the leg with some of the 'flesh' colour showing through.

Difficult to explain but hope this helps.

I read also that some painters using this technique do not use shadows when painting their flesh i.e. they only apply base flesh and highlight this and then do washes of the stocking colour.

Which figure are you working on as a matter of interest?

Cheers and good luck

when I was doing the larger erotic sculpts for some collectors in KC . Wife won't let me do them anymore, they all have to be clothed . What fun is that .I would use an air brush for the flesh tones, then shoot it with dull coat. Then to make the nylons upper band and seam up the back depending on the era, with black acrylic. Then take mars black oil and paint the intire stocking area . With a soft cloth start to rub the oil off more around the wider areas of the leg where the stocking would be streached the most. caution the leg can not have ant flaws what so ever the black will settle in and look very bad. hope this helps

G'day all,
I did a few figures from Mascot. I painted the flesh first, and the mixed a clear flat tinted with black(or white). Masked off the figure and then airbrushed the black onto it. After a few passes (heaver in the folds) the flesh colour was still visable through the black. I also tryed it on a 200mm figure and it looked good. My wife would not let me compare the figure to the real thing, but I think it came out ok. Hope this helps.

Isn't it odd that significant others tend to get a bit "upset" when we mention painting the female form. I wonder if the reaction would be the same if the figure being painted was that of a man wearing a skimpy thong bathing suit. hmmm !!! (not that I'd ever paint one).

Call me old fashioned, call me prudish, call me Ishmael, but I wouldnt do such a thoroughly research on that subject. ;)
If I ever was goint to paint one that is.

John, I am sure that if some company thought they could make a dollar on csting such a figure, I'm sure they would. Janne,I would not even cosider painting it. Research...no!!! Joking aside, I just had a look at the Scamms 2004 show. That female figure painted by Davig Whitford is fantastic. Anybody know the manufacturer?

David's figure just sort of caught my eye. Painting superb. Pose tasteful. One of these days I my actually be able to get to a show like SCAMMS. Pete everything is OK. Latorre's piate bust is washed, primed and ready to go. Ha Ha !!!
