As you might have seen from my earlier post on Great Uncle Harold, one of the things I enjoy (one among many!) is making figures of family members who have served in the armed forces.
So far I have made my father (bust and full figure), my mother (bust and full figure), my maternal grandfather (bust), my wife’s great uncles (bust and full figure) and my best man’s father (bust).
I’m not saying that facially there look like the real subjects (I’m not that good a sculptor!) but I do try to get at least the face of the shape correct. The uniform, insignia and equipment are fully researched and made as accurately as possible. Of course, the research is half the fun!
I am presently working on my paternal grand father (while also working on Gus MacCrae for the western competition currently running - see separate thread) and have others lined up, but the latest to be finished is my father in law, Ivan Barker, who was a Stoker Petty Officer aboard HMS Cadiz and responsible for the boilers (being a boiler maker in civilian life).
A simple scratch build bust in 200mm scale. The period PO badge on the base acquired from eBay and the name plate from those great people at NameIt!.
