Stormtrooper Miniatures have been seriously busy with their release schedule this year offering some wonderful additions to the already impressive catalogue they have formed. One of the latest releases I have been sent for review is this impressive looking Prussian Hussar, if the box art is anything to go by then this looks set to be a real gem. Lets take a closer look……..
First Impressions.
What another truly wonderful piece of box art this is. Ernesto Reyes is, in my opinion, without doubt one of the greats. He proves his endless ability and talents time and time again when he brings these beautiful busts and figures to life in such majestic style.
Inside the sturdy cardboard box the parts are very well protected being wrapped in a thick layer of bubble wrap. The hand holding the pipe along with the pedestal base and the length of wire are also sealed inside a clear plastic re-sealable zip bag. Everything arrived in perfect condition with no damage or missing parts.
The sculpt is magnificent, a real credit to Stormtroopers proprietor Stuart Hale. The beautiful detailing Stuart has applied has held up very well indeed during the casting process. The quality of the resin is top drawer, a beautiful consistency to work with being neither to soft or brittle. I found no imperfections or faults while any flash and seams are kept to a minimum and very easy to make good.
The Figure.
The figure represents a Prussian Hussar from 1870/71. Requiring assembly and painting it consists of 3 individual resin pieces (including the display pedestal) cast in a light grey colour. There is also a length of wire included in the kit as well as two sheets of reference material.
The most significant part is the main torso, only the right hand, detailing wire and pedestal base needs to be added to complete the bust. From the moment you see the main piece the quality becomes immediately obvious. Rich detailing, sharp well defined features and a beautifully clean sculpt offer a very tempting project.

One of the most prominent features of the figure is of course the Busby style hat synonymous with the Hussar’s. This photo highlights the superb level of accurate detailing that has been applied to the figure, in this instance the chin strap scales and side bosses. For comparison I have included reference photos below which clearly shows the attention to detail our figure received.

A pair of reproduced fish scale chin straps, beautifully crafted here and indeed wonderfully replicated in stunning detail on our figure.

Typical style of side bosses, the ones sculpted onto our figure look just perfect in comparison.

Close up of the chin strap scales and side bosses from a perfectly accurate replica Busby. The fish scale pattern of the strap has been faithfully replicated in resin for our figure.

A beautiful example of a highly accurate reproduction busby helmet as worn by our figure. Every piece of detail has been expertly reproduced on our figure.

The face holds a wealth of exquisitely sharp detail. Seen side on like this really helps show the beautiful crispness of the detailing that has held up so well in the excellent casting. The combination of layers with the tunic, bandolier and overcoat works exceptionally well adding superb dimension to the appearance.

Such a wonderfully expressive face completely brings the character to life. The piercing glaring eyes, the frown and the heavy well grown beard and moustache all help create a convincing character. All is perfectly proportioned.
(photo below)
The Cockade and Bandeau help create the very impressive Busby hat, both have been perfectly formed in the sculpt. You will also notice the upturned collar of the overcoat, a great addition.
(photo below)
The Dolman tunic looks fantastic, the braiding and buttons are just superb with the raised detail. Also worthy of a mention is the overcoat. The way the lapels have been sculpted is sublime, it really adds movement and interest to the overall finish, highly impressive.

A perfectly accurate reproduction Dolman tunic. The braiding and buttons have been superbly well reproduced on our figure, the stiff high neck collar also.
(photo below)
The Brocade Bandolier lays very nicely over the tunic and looks totally authentic, I have included reference photos below to show just how authentic it looks on the figure. That braiding ‘pops’ beautifully along with the buttons.

A typical example of Brocade Bandolier with ammunition pouch.

A more intricate and decorative officers Brocade Bandolier.

Another feature of the Busby hat is the distinctive ‘bag’ that overhangs the one side. These were coloured and used to identify specific regiments. The one on our figure looks excellent and well proportioned. The reference material included in the kit has details of the colours used by individual regiments of this era. The upturned collar looks great from this angle, the buttoned epaulets too.

The texture of the Busby fur has been captured to perfection, the depth of detail is sublime and does real justice to the piece. Painted, washes applied and highlighting added this Busby is going to look simply awesome as you will see come the end of this review.
