Hi all,

I am planning on painting a 90mm white metal Andrea mini. of Julius Caesar and was wondering if anyone can recommend an authentic Roman red for his tunic. I am interested in either oils or arcrylics? In addition, it appears that the figure has a solid chestplate (breastplate). Any recommendations on an authentic color. Once agai, thanks for your time.

Arent they still not sure if they were white, red or green as in Asterix?
I would say that the dying method during the time could not produce similar results every time depending on the raw material used for the clothes and dying material?

Use and dirt will also affect the colour.

For someone of his standing aim for crimson rather than scarlet, orange-red (for fabric dyed using kermes rather than madder).

A garment might even have been dyed Trian purple - a very expensive colour and using it for an entire garment would have been an ostentatious display of wealth or position.

The muscled cuirass would likely be silvered or gilded so painting it just as if it were solid silver or gold is the way to go for either of those.
