Johan Zacharias Bång, born April 19, 1782 in Umeå, died in 1845 in Wilhelmina, Swedish military, recipient of the Medal for bravery in the field, and cobbler.

Parents were Gunner Johan Peter Bång and his wife Maja Stina Nilsdotter from Uusimaa.

Biography

Very little is known about Bång, but it is claimed that he is the model for Runebergs Sven Dufva. Bång was part of the Finnish army under General Johan August Sandels and he suggested particpating in the Battle of Koljonvirta October 27, 1808.

At the battle so was the soldier No 100 Bång in Korsholms company, Botnia regiment. At the battle the Russians had, which outnumbered the Swedes four to one, under command of Prince Mikhail Petrovich Dolgorukov performed a heave assault against the Swedes fortified beach on the other side Virta spring. The battle was fierce and the Swedes where pushed back slowly, but rallying the troops to counterattack, Swedes could again advance.

It was during this part of the battle Bång, along with his comrades, threw himself into the battle on the bridge. As his bayonet was not enough so his startet swinging his rifle as a club hitting advancing russian with the heavy butt until it broke. After a while he fell unconscious down on the bridge, and was later found and retrieved when the battle was won to be taken to a field hospital in Vieremä. He had received not less than 10 bayonet cuts and trusts. Unlike Dufva, Bång survived the battle and received the medal for bravery in the field. He was later taken as a prisoner of war, but survived that as well.

In 1815 he settled as a shoemaker in Wilhelmina, where he died in relative poverty, marked by alcohol abuse, 1845. He was buried at Wilhelmina cemetery. He married in 1815 to Anna Margareta Baudin, skräddardotter from Öjebyn Piteå rural parish.

EK Casting seems to have some interesting figures. Unfortunately I didn't get the English version to work so it was a bit difficult to understand. Is their stuff is ok?

It's really fascinating story about your ancestor Janne, stories like that makes this hobby even more interesting. Johan Bångs is one of those, and I just recently decided to do a small vignette from the battle ofVirta bro. It's not much to see yet but still i like to share a couple of pictures.

That's really cool Janne, you should do it. I like those small figures, you can really do a massive diorama in a small space.

Cheers / Lars
